Ken Nolte lives in Port Mansfield, Texas. On weekends he fishes and explores the bays and tidal flats in his airboat. The boat offers access to great fishing areas that can't be reached in other bay boats.

Several species of mist flower are planted in the gardens at Estero Llano Grande State Park to attract a variety of butterflies. The colorful plants and butterflies are a majoy of the reason so many families enjoy strolling the park's trail system.
Falcon State Park visitors will find mid-day is the best time for butterflying the fabulous garden. One might encounter 20 species or more among the mist flowers, Turk's cap, frog fruit, and other flowering plants.

The yellow-trumpet shrubs at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse can attract some rare butterflies like the Green-backed Rubyspot, so Mission Butterfly Festival tour leader, Javier DeLeon (with cap) is leading his group around the plant for a close inspection.
Mission Butterfly Festival tour leader,Javier DeLeon, is a butterfly expert but he admits it is a good idea to have a field guide in hand when butterflying the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. "A trip to butterfly gardens along the border could produce a first-time record butterfly from Mexico or at least a rarity that must be confirmed with the aid of a comprehensive field guide", says DeLeon.
Part of a Mission Butterfly Festival tour group: Sam and Jeryl Leifeste got the most of their visit to the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse butterfly gardens. Jeryl quickly learned some of the secrets to successful butterfly photography - approach the creature slowly, don't let your shadow fall on the butterfly, and keep the camera steady. She came away with some very nice shots of Gulf Fritillary.

Jeryl Leifeste came to south Texas for the Mission Butterfly Festival and she was not disappointed. Among her favorite places was the Estero Llano Grande State Park butterfly garden in Weslaco.
