Master Naturalists, Dita Strohmeyer (banded shirt) and Linda McGonigle (dark glasses) assist Sea Turtle, Inc. and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with searches and information gathering associated with endangered Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle nests each spring and summer at South Padre Island. Here they refine their techniques on a mock nest at the foot of the South Padre dunes. Their work includes locating nests, measuring tracks and nest size, and assisting in the removal of eggs to a sancturary where they are hatched. The young are then released at the nest site as assisted in reaching the safety of the surf.
